Most Shopify agencies can build a store. Fewer can build the right store for a brand doing $2M+. The difference isn’t design taste or how good the portfolio looks — it’s technical access. Shopify Plus unlocks a set of capabilities that require a certified Plus Partner to implement. Standard developers are locked out by the platform itself.
I’m Cesar Beltran, founder and chief technologist at Blackbelt Commerce. We’ve been Shopify Plus Partners for over a decade. Here are the six Shopify Plus Expert services that separate real Plus work from everything else.
1. Custom Checkout via Checkout Extensibility
Checkout is where revenue is made or lost. Everything upstream — traffic, product pages, add-to-cart rates — is wasted if checkout leaks.
When Shopify deprecated checkout.liquid in 2024, custom checkout work became exclusive to Plus Partners. The replacement — Checkout Extensibility — lets certified experts build directly inside the checkout flow: upsell blocks that fire based on cart contents, custom fields for personalization, conditional logic for shipping rules, trust signals injected at the point of decision.
A standard developer cannot touch this. They can recommend apps that approximate some of these functions — with slower load times, less reliability, and no access to the checkout DOM. A certified Plus Expert builds natively.
We cover the full scope in our Shopify Plus checkout customization guide and the Checkout Extensibility decision framework.
2. Shopify Flow — Automation at Scale
Shopify Flow is a Plus-exclusive trigger-based automation engine. Non-Plus stores have a limited version. Plus stores have the full platform — and only Plus Partners know how to build with it properly.
What we’ve built with Flow for clients: automatically tag VIP customers when their lifetime value crosses $500 and trigger a Klaviyo segment push. Route high-value orders to priority fulfillment. Auto-archive products when inventory hits zero and fire a restock alert to a Slack channel. Run B2B approval workflows for net-terms customers.
Each of these replaces a developer’s manual work or a third-party app that adds latency and cost. Flow is built into Plus. Most brands on Plus don’t use it because their agency doesn’t know it exists.
3. Launchpad — Campaign Execution Without a Developer on Call
Launchpad is Shopify’s Plus-exclusive campaign scheduling tool. Scheduled product launches, price changes, and theme publishes — all set in advance and executed automatically at a specific date and time.
The practical value for a DTC brand: your BFCM product drops run on schedule whether or not anyone is at a computer. A 14-product launch at midnight on Black Friday doesn’t require a developer on standby. A flash sale that starts at 6am EST and ends at 6pm can be set, tested, and forgotten — it runs itself.
We’ve used Launchpad for clients running high-volume seasonal campaigns. Before it, BFCM required a developer on call from midnight through the morning. With Launchpad, it requires a well-built workflow set a week in advance.
4. Multi-Store Architecture via Organization Admin
When a brand expands — new market, new sub-brand, new language — the standard approach is a separate Shopify account. That creates silos: separate customer data, separate analytics, separate admin logins, separate everything.
Shopify Plus Organization Admin solves this. A certified Plus Expert can build a multi-store architecture where one organization umbrella covers multiple storefronts — shared customer data, centralized analytics, localized product catalogs and pricing, and Markets for international currency and tax handling.
This is the architecture a $5M brand needs when they enter their second market. Standard Shopify developers don’t have access to configure it. Plus Partners do.
5. Shopify B2B Native
Since 2023, Shopify Plus has included a native B2B module: wholesale pricing rules, net terms, company accounts, draft orders, and quantity breaks — all without third-party apps.
Before native B2B, most wholesale setups on Shopify were app-based: Wholesale Club, Bold B2B, custom solutions held together with Metafields and Liquid hacks. These setups are slow, fragile, and expensive to maintain.
Native B2B is faster, more reliable, and cleaner. But configuring it properly — company account structures, price list assignments, payment terms, checkout logic for B2B customers — requires a Plus Partner who has actually built with it. We cover the full comparison in Shopify B2B on Plus vs. every other plan.
6. Custom Apps via the Partners API
The Shopify App Store covers a lot. It doesn’t cover everything — and for enterprise brands, the gaps are usually in integrations with proprietary systems: ERPs, custom fulfillment networks, loyalty platforms built in-house, or data pipelines that don’t have a ready-made connector.
Building a custom app for a Shopify Plus merchant requires Plus Partner API access and Shopify’s approval pipeline. Standard developers cannot submit or deploy custom apps through this channel. A certified Plus Partner can — which means a brand can have a fully custom integration that lives inside Shopify’s infrastructure, not bolted on from outside.
This is the difference between a solution that scales with your store and one that becomes a maintenance burden as you grow.
If you’re evaluating agencies, the next question is how the hiring process works: start with the 12 questions to ask before hiring Shopify Plus Experts, then look at how certified experts handle migrations differently — the highest-risk engagement in ecommerce.
