The two badge names look almost identical. The pricing often does too. But if you’ve hired a “Shopify Expert” when you needed a Shopify Plus Expert, you know the outcomes are anything but similar — usually somewhere between a $40,000 and $150,000 lesson.
I’m Cesar Beltran, founder of Blackbelt Commerce. We’ve held Shopify Plus Partner status for over 10 years and shipped more than 1,000 projects. I’ve seen this confusion cost brands money more times than I can count. Here’s how to understand the difference — and how to protect yourself before you hire.
The Two Tiers — What Shopify Actually Certifies
Shopify runs two distinct certification tiers, and the naming doesn’t make it easy to tell them apart.
Shopify Experts are vetted freelancers and agencies who can build and manage standard Shopify stores. They go through a vetting process, but there’s no enterprise-level requirement. They’re capable for most standard builds.
Shopify Plus Experts — more precisely, Shopify Plus Partners — are a separate, higher tier. Shopify requires a track record of enterprise builds, compliance standards, dedicated support SLAs, and platform-specific capabilities before granting this status. Blackbelt Commerce is certified at both levels, with 10+ years of Plus Partner history and 1,000+ completed projects.
The practical difference: a standard Shopify Expert cannot access Checkout Extensibility, Shopify Flow at scale, Launchpad, multi-store Organization Admin, or B2B native features. A Shopify Plus Expert can — and more importantly, has built with them repeatedly.
What a Shopify Plus Expert Actually Builds (That Others Can’t)
Here’s what’s on the table when you work with a certified Shopify Plus Expert:
Custom checkout via Checkout Extensibility. Upsell blocks, custom fields, conditional logic, trust signals injected at checkout. This is where revenue is made or lost. Standard developers lost access to checkout customization when checkout.liquid was deprecated in 2024 — only Plus Partners can build here now.
Shopify Flow automation. Trigger-based workflows: auto-tag VIP customers when LTV hits $500, route high-value orders to priority fulfillment, send enriched data to Klaviyo. Flow is a Plus-only feature.
Launchpad. Scheduled product launches, price changes, and theme publishes — all automated. We used Launchpad for a client’s BFCM campaign to run 14 simultaneous product drops without a developer on call at midnight.
Multi-store architecture. Expansion into new markets, sub-brands, or languages via Shopify’s Organization Admin. Shared customer data, localized storefronts, unified analytics.
Shopify B2B native. Wholesale pricing, net terms, company accounts — all built natively in Plus without third-party apps. The difference in performance and reliability is significant.
Custom apps via the Partners API. ERP integrations, proprietary workflows, custom fulfillment logic — built and submitted through Shopify’s approval pipeline, which requires Plus Partner API access.
The Hiring Mistake That Costs $40K–$150K
The pattern I see most often: a founder hires a capable Shopify developer — not a Plus Partner — for what looks like a standard project. Then one of these happens.
A migration loses 40% of organic search traffic because URL redirects weren’t mapped at the platform level. A BFCM campaign can’t launch on the automated schedule because the developer doesn’t have Launchpad access. A checkout customization that was scoped and paid for turns out to be impossible — the agency isn’t a Plus Partner and can’t touch the checkout.
By the time the founder realizes the agency wasn’t actually certified at the Plus level, they’ve already paid the retainer, lost the timeline, and in the worst cases, lost revenue they can’t recover. The fix costs more than getting it right the first time would have. We break down the full cost picture in our post on the true cost of a Shopify Expert.
How to Verify a Real Shopify Plus Expert in 60 Seconds
Don’t take any agency’s word for it. Here’s how to verify in under a minute:
1. Check the Shopify Partner Directory. Go to shopify.com/partners/directory, search the agency name, and look specifically for the “Shopify Plus Partner” badge. Not “Shopify Partner” — the “Plus” distinction matters. If it’s not there, they’re not certified.
2. Ask for three Plus-specific case studies. Not “Shopify builds” — Plus builds. Ask for specifics: what plan was the client on, what Plus features were used, what were the measurable outcomes. A certified agency answers this easily. A generalist stalls or redirects to portfolio aesthetics. Our full guide to hiring a Shopify expert without getting burned covers what else to ask.
3. Ask what they’ve built with Flow or Checkout Extensibility. These are the two features most specific to Plus-level work. A genuinely certified agency has war stories — campaigns they’ve automated, checkout funnels they’ve built. Someone who’s been faking the credential will either go vague or admit they haven’t touched them.
What This Means for Your Store Right Now
If you’re doing $500K–$5M in revenue and hitting limits — checkout that won’t convert, speed scores dragging organic traffic, BFCM prep that requires a developer on standby — you’re at the inflection point where Plus-level expertise starts paying for itself. Understanding Shopify Plus vs. Shopify Advanced is the first decision to get right. Understanding Shopify Plus vs. Shopify Advanced is the first decision to get right.
The question isn’t whether you can afford a Shopify Plus Expert. It’s whether you can afford to keep trying to solve Plus-level problems with non-Plus tools.
